General Assistance (Monthly)
Provided in the form of a basic needs allowance for rent, food, utilities, clothing, personal and household supplies. All grants are paid directly to the vendor. Any residents needing help must apply to see if they are eligible for assistance. Recipients must participate in a Community Work Program set up by the township and look for employment every month they are eligible. This program is for someone who is single.
This program provides a resident who is starting a job needing supplies before beginning employment. (ID, Uniform, Bus Tickets, ETC.)
Financial aid for families with children to alleviate a life threatening circumstance or to assist in attaining self-sufficiency. Residents must have a late, eviction or disconnect (utilities) notice to be eligible for this program.
Federal Emergency Management Assistance (FEMA)
Provides emergency housing assistance. Those seeking assistance are encouraged to apply when the money becomes available around February or March and it is first come first serve basis. You must not be eligible for General or Emergency Assistance through the township. You must be denied both programs to qualify for the FEMA funds.
Transportation & Seniors
Senior Food Relief Program
Our Senior Food Relief program provides a monthly $25.00 gift certificate to Aldi or Hy-Vee to eligible seniors in our township. Please contact the General Assistance Office at 788-0496 for further information.
Senior Denture Program
The Township has a new program for Income eligible seniors to receive new or replacement dentures. We will be using the same guidelines as our Senior Food Relief Program. Please contact the General Assistance Office at 788-0496 for further information.
Unemployment Bus Tickets (Yearly)
A resident can receive 20 free tickets in a twelve month period. An ID and current piece of mail for proof of address is required to receive tickets.
Temporary Handicapped Placards
The Placard offers parking privileges for those with temporary disabilities. The doctor’s form and placards are available at the township. Permanent handicapped placards and applications are also available at the township, but the applications for permanent cards need to be mailed to Springfield.
Flu & Pneumonia Clinic
The township annually holds a Flu & Pneumonia clinic for any resident of the township. The township will cover the cost if a resident cannot. Seniors can bring in their Medicare cards to cover the cost. Refreshments are served.
A notary is always available at the township free of charge.

Free Leaf Bags for the Spring & Fall
The City of Rock Island is providing free leaf collection bags for all residents. Residents do not have to participate in the Yard Waste
Subscription for this leaf collection service. Bags are available to all township residents. You are allowed 20 free bags a day per household while supplies last. Please bring a current ID with your address on it.
Laminations, Copies & Faxing
Residents can receive 10 free laminations and black & white copies a month.
Laminations - I.D., Letter and Legal size. Additional laminations will cost: I.D. =.50 cents & Letter/Legal = $1.00.
Black & white copies - Letter, Legal & Ledger size. Additional copies will cost (for any size) = .25 cents.
Color Copies - Cost for Color Copies: Letter = .50 cents, Legal = .75 cents & Ledger = $1.00, Copies will be photo quality and will be printed on LASER PAPER.
Fax Charges- 1 to 10 sheets will be $2.50 and .50 cents for any additional sheets. We will supply a fax cover sheets at no charge. Note: All fax services are now done in the General Assistance Office located at the back of the building.
South Rock Island Township is now offering a free giveaway every Tuesday morning from 9:00 – 11:30 in the center hall. Many different items will be offered including clothing, kitchen items, shoes and other misc. items. This event is open to all residents of our township.

Donate Old Eyeglasses
Medical Equipment – SRIT will accept used canes, walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs in serviceable
condition for our less fortunate residents.
Office Supplies – The Township would greatly appreciate donations or any office supplies to help keep
costs down and save your tax dollars.
Hygiene Products – We will gladly accept travel sized toiletry products for our General Assistance clients
including toothpaste, mouthwash, new toothbrushes, razors and shaving cream.
Knitting Supplies – Please donate unused yarn, needles and crochet hooks to our Knitting & Crocheting
Club so they can make scarves, mittens and hats for our needy residents.
Gardening Equipment – We will accept donations of used gardening equipment, gloves and seeds for use
in our Community Garden.
Community Library - Bring your used books, CD’s, DVD’s, VHS’s and Books on Tape to the Township and
feel free to choose something else from our collection.
Remember those old pairs of eyeglasses that you’ve saved "just in case"? Bring them down to our Lions Club collection box located in the Town Hall. We will forward them to the Lions Club for recycling. Help someone else enjoy the gift of sight! We also have applications from the Lion’s Club if you cannot afford to buy new glasses.
Cell Phones for Soldiers
South Rock Island Township is proud to be an official collection site for the Cell Phones for Soldiers program.
This program was founded in 2004 by teenagers in Massachusetts as a means of showing gratitude for the men and women who have sacrificed day-to-day
contact with their own families to serve in the U.S. armed forces.
Old cell phones are sent to a cell phone recycling center which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone enough to provide a prepaid calling card for an hour of talk time to a soldier abroad. If you are worried about information stored on your cell phone, the Cell Phone Data Eraser (http:/www.wirelessrecycling.com) gives you the tools you need to remove personal information. Anyone can donate their old cell phones at our office during our regular business hours so these brave Americans can keep in touch with their families.
Cooling Facility/ Warming Center
The Township during the summer/winter is a facility for any resident needing a means of staying cool/warm. Bring along a game, book or just sit back, relax, and watch TV.
Book, VHS, CD & DVD Exchange
The township is now offering a program to get rid of your old books, DVD’s, CD’s, VHS’s and Audio Books to put them to good use. Bring a book or a recording in and exchange it for another. Donations always accepted.
The township now has travel size toiletries for anyone needing something to get them by. All residents can donate travel size toiletries to help residents in need.
Box Tops for Education
The township is a drop off site for the Box Tops for Education Program. Please cut out the Box Top Coupons from your boxed goods.
There is a list at the township of products included in this program.
Each year blankets are donated to all Townships in Rock Island County. Stop by today and pick up a blanket to keep warm.
Student Hunger Drive
Each year Rock Island High School sponsors a Hunger Drive along with other schools in the district. The township is a drop off site for any non-perishable items starting in September.

2-1-1 is one of the many services United Way offers Quad Citians to help build the strength of our community.
A recycling container is available in the back of the Township. Residents can recycle plastics, tin, aluminum, cardboard, newspaper, phonebooks and brown paper bags. Glass is now acceptable.
South Rock Island Township provides small individual garden plots to interested individuals each spring.
The plots are located within a couple of blocks of our town hall at 935 29th Avenue, Rock Island. Families and individuals are able to grow their own produce, with the responsibility of caring for their plot. Excess produce can be brought to the township to share with residents in need. If any SRIT resident is interested in participating or donating garden tools or seeds please contact the General Assistance Staff at 788-0496.
U.S. Flag Disposal
Do you have a US Flag that has lost its “glory”? Bring your flag to our office where arrangements will be made for proper disposal.
Knitting & Crocheting Club - Looking for New Members!
The club is open to all individuals in Rock Island County who want to come on a regular basis or just one afternoon to see if knitting or crocheting
is for you. Whether you’re experienced or want to learn, please join us on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 - 3:30pm in the Town Hall. Please use our back entrance and enjoy an afternoon of fun
while meeting your neighbors for a worthy cause. Join us - mark Thursday afternoons on your calendar!
Community Work Program/Assistance for Non-Profit Groups
Any Rock Island Non-Profit organizations are encouraged to contact the township with any minor jobs they
need assistance with that can be done at the township office (i.e. stuffing envelopes). We will gladly assign General Assistance Clients as part
of their Community Work Program, at no charge to assist with your project.

Job Placement Board
South Rock Island Township invites all area businesses to post available job openings on our Job Placement Board. The Township assumes no responsibility for screening, but offers businesses the opportunity to list available openings at no charge.
